Total Hip Replacement

Post-operative pain is associated with increased hospital length of stay, delayed ambulation, and long-term functional impairment. Whereas appropriate caution is warranted in administering opioid analgesics to older adults, it has been demonstrated that improved pain control may decrease length of stay, enhance functional recovery, and improve long-term functional outcomes. Thus, the need for non-opioid pain control is apparent.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (RSD)

Complex regional pain syndrome is described as a disease of the autonomic nervous system. The condition develops over time and is often related to a previous significant trauma. InterX vs Baseline

Non-invasive interactive neurostimulation (InterX ®) methodologies for treating post-operative pain and facilitating recovery after injury have been anecdotally known to be effective and more recently proven efficacious in clinical trials. InterX is FDA cleared for the treatment of acute and chronic pain, however a recent clinical trial showed reductions in inflammation in the treated group compared to control. While the pain relief mechanisms are widely accepted, the mechanism(s) by which a reduction of inflammation
occurs is not well documented. In this study it is hypothesized that changes in lymphocyte metabolism, gene expression and cytokine production following InterX® treatment may illustrate mechanisms of action related to the body’s inflammatory response.

A previous InterX study which examined the effect of Interactive Neurostimulation pre and post treatment was extended to include volunteers treated with a TENS device to compare the physiological response following another form of electrical stimulation. As the amplitude used with the InterX is approximately three times higher than TENS and the current density up to ninety times higher, it is hypothesized that a significantly greater physiological response will occur following InterX than following TENS.

Linsey Heidelberg

Linsey Heidelberg was enjoying her teenage years and looking forward to her first step of independence, turning 16 years old. In addition to being a vibrant leader and National Honor Society member, Linsey loved gymnastics and was a three-time All-American cheerleader.

In August 2004, Linsey suffered a knee injury. After two months of physical therapy, she returned to cheerleading. One week after returning to the squad, Linsey suffered a fractured vertebra (L4 Pars Defect) performing a stunt at practice. This serious injury resulted in a back brace and later surgically implanted wires and screws to stabilize her back. Although Linsey had begun to recover from these two accidents, increasing pain in her leg and back caused her condition to deteriorate until she began to suffer seizures, sometimes lasting up to six hours, due to the intense pain.
